A while back while I was doing my shopping, I was given a free box of Arjoli Dip to try out. Arjoli Dip is a traditional Maltese food which is similar to Garlic Aioli but made using breadcrumbs. Although it did not seem to have any creepy ingredients, the dip was drowning in sunflower oil. Since 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil contains roughly 120 calories, I wanted to make my own lighter and fresher version. This option contains much less oil. It’s perfect for those who are counting calories or on a weight loss diet.
Have you ever tried Maltese Arjoli dip? It’s a herby, fragrant, and creamy sauce or dip made with garlic, herbs, tomatoes, bread, and olive oil. The Maltese love eating this with snails (NOT me!). Some recipes even call for tuna and anchovies. I obviously chose to not include these, since I’m vegetarian and on a mission to transition to 100% vegan. Since I eat a plant-based diet, I always try to sneak in some protein any way I can. In this case, I used naturally low fat soy-based Greek yogurt. It gives the dip a nice creamy texture and packs in 6g of protein per 100g.
I even added a teaspoon of Harissa to give it a bit of a spicy kick. A teaspoon of Harissa only gives a slight hint of spicy, yet feel free to omit if your tolerance to spices is very low.
